Officers will be out in Popley today conducting enquires in relation to four keyless thefts of motor vehicles that occurred this week.

The four vehicles were stolen between 22:00 on 21/02/2024 and 05:00 on 22/02/2024. They were stolen from the following areas - 

Miles Road, Popley
Speckled Wood Road, Popley
Appleton Drive, Popley
Munday Way, Popley

What is Keyless Car Theft?

Keyless car theft, also known as Relay theft, is where the signal from a key for a so-called “Keyless entry” car is captured by somebody standing outside the victim’s house using a device. This signal is then relayed to someone else who is standing next to your car and has a second device that fools the car into thinking the key is near it, allowing the doors to be opened and ignition to be started. 

Keyless car theft facts:

- Thieves only need to be within a few metres from your car keys to capture the signal.

- Any car that uses keyless entry is at risk of relay theft.

- It can take less than two minutes for thieves to gain full access to your car. 

Advice:

1. Keep keys out of sight and away from doors and windows.

2. Use a signal blocking pouch, known as a Faraday Bag, to store your keys (and any spare sets) which blocks your car key fob from transmitting its code to the vehicle.

3. Turn off your Keyless Fob’s Wireless Signal. Wireless signals on some keyless fobs can be switched off. Look in your cars manual to see if you can do this.

4. Use a tested and approved Steering Wheel /Pedal / Gear Lock as a deterrent. They are inexpensive, easy to install and off-putting to criminals. Sold Secure approved products are tested against tools used by criminals such as Crowbars and Angle Grinders.

5. Tracking devices can help track down your vehicle and the perpetrator should it be taken.

6. Invest in the right technology. Most modern cars are fitted with alarms and immobilisers as standard, check with your manufacturer to make sure your car is as secure as it can be.

7. Re-programme your keys if you buy a second hand car.

8. Park securely. Use your garage if you have one.

9. CCTV and Lighting - If you park on your driveway consider fitting outdoor motion detector lighting and CCTV.
