Crime prevention advice for New Forest residents on theft and to register and mark property

During the warmer months, many of us are enjoying the outdoors more, particularly in the New Forest which is a wonderful, safe, and popular destination in Hampshire.

We want residents and visitors to continue enjoying the summer and the New Forest by encouraging and reminding visitors and residents of some key crime prevention advice and to take practical steps to protect property and valuables. Find out more about the campaign and what we’re doing here.

Many thefts can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions, including:

Locking bicycles securely with a robust locking system (use a lock tested to GOLD standard or higher) and to a solid structure fixed to the ground.

Check your vehicle’s doors are all securely locked and keep windows completely closed.

Take everything with you and don’t hide any items in your vehicle.

Keep structures maintained and don’t leave doors unlocked or propped open.

Lock valuable items to ground anchors and hide away from view inside sheds and garages.

Consider insurance cover and register and mark all high-cost items such as bicycles, power tools, lawn mowers, and sports equipment.

Document their serial numbers and take photographs to make it easier for them to be returned to you if they are stolen.

Our officers will be:

Carrying out high-visibility patrols across the New Forest.

Coordinating Bicycle Register Marking events at various locations.

Working closely with partners, businesses, and the public.

Visiting various locations to engage with tourists and residents to provide crime prevention advice and resources.

Carrying out checks of bicycles and vehicles to see if they have adequate security in place and provide information to the owner on how to improve.

There are several Bicycle Register Marking events taking place this summer:

Wednesday 12 August between 10am – 11am at Lymington Train Station.

Thursday 13 August between 1pm – 2pm at Ringwood Gateway Council Offices.

Friday 14 August between 11am – 12pm at Lyndhurst Police Station.

Wednesday 19 August between 2pm – 3pm at Totton Police Station.

Friday 21 August between 10am – 11am at Boost Bike Hub Brockenhurst.

Saturday 5 September between 12pm – 2pm at Ashurst Village Fete.
